There’s a lot of things you don’t hear people say.

“LeBron James is terrible at basketball.”

“LeBron James is a real cool dude.”

“I wish they would make more Hangover sequels.”

“April Fools’ Day is my favorite holiday of all time.”

Clearly, the last phrase is fueled by today’s festivities. April Fools’ Day is a fluffy, sugary way of saying “it’s totally okay to be an annoying jerk today.” And John Oliver totally agrees.

[quote_right]”“April Fools’ Day is to comedy as St. Patricks Day is to Irish Culture””[/quote_right]

Part of why John Oliver is fantastic is because he provides an unpopular opinion in the most entertaining way possible. Sure, April Fools’ Day is supposed to be fun and lighthearted. But hearing John Oliver say the opposite is even more fun and lighthearted.

Seriously, he could give a play-by-play to the end of Marley and Me and still be swoon-inducing. Maybe it’s because he’s British.

Rather than jumping on the practical joke train, Oliver basically says that this is a holiday for sociopaths. The video ends by making the audience pledge “not to be a dick” on this day of so-called frivolous trickery.

He even gives us an example:

“You may not know that April Fools’ Day was actually invented by FDR in 1934 as a way to raise national morale during the Great Depression…APRIL FOOL! That’s not true at all! I made it up! You trusted me and I betrayed that trust! Isn’t betrayal fun?”

John Oliver, you scoundrel.

April Fools' Day

Exhibit A: I ain’t even mad

While the exact origins of this day may not be known – partly because no one knows and partly because no one cares – all we are going to do is agree. April Fools’ Day is annoying.

You have to be on your toes all day. Not to mention, there are so many let downs. A few years ago, Taco Bell joked that they were going to buy the Liberty Bell and re-name it the Taco Liberty Bell.

Who wouldn’t want that to happen? Let’s be real, that would be a better re-name than the Sears Tower to Willis.

Ironically, John Oliver has given us a reason to laugh un-ironically on this day. And for that, we tip our hats.

But hey, if you are going to be ‘that guy’ in the office today, have fun. We’ll all be ignoring you.
