About a week before Halloween, I managed to get set up with a photo pass for Freaky Deaky through React. Looking at the lineup for the 3-day festival, I was more than happy to drive up from St. Louis for the weekend to shoot some of my favorite artists. The festival showcased some of the biggest names for their headliners, including Bassnectar, Armin Van Buuren, Big Gigantic, Pretty Lights, Carnage, and many more.
Although I was pretty skeptical at first about an outdoor festival being held in Chicago at the end of October, React more than exceeded my expectations with their levels of production and overall organization of Freaky Deaky.
FREAKY DEAKY DAY 1
I unfortunately arrived a little late on Friday, but I was still able to make it to the one set I was most excited for: Flying Lotus. Before I really got big into electronic music, I was a huge hip-hop head, and about six years ago I stumbled across FlyLo’s Reset EP, and was instantly hooked. And last weekend I got to catch him live for my first time.
As much as I didn’t want to leave early, I felt the need to catch the end of GRiZ‘s set, so I ran across the festival grounds, which only took about 5 minutes, and jumped into the photo pit right as the master of funk started ripping it on the sax.
And to close out night one, Bassnectar crushed his set with some intense bass music. The God of bass never disappoints live, and he threw down extra hard for Halloween weekend.
