We’ve reached a crossroads in electronic dance music.
2014 has brought a lot of changes within the listening community of the genre. Not necessarily anything bad, kind of comparable to a relationship that just isn’t really going anywhere. It’s always the same bullshit over and over again – until you finally decide that you just need to see other people.
We can still be friends though, right?
The point is, people want something different. If you’re anything like me, you’ve been waiting for a change of pace for a while – where artists that do more than just make you jump up and down get the attention they deserve.
ODESZA, an electronic, chill-wave duo from Seattle, Washington, have emerged from the woodwork to be one of the biggest prodigies in electronic music today. Imagine if Flume and Wave Racer came together to do a side project, and you would have the In Return LP.
Harrison Mills and Clayton Knight met while still in school at Western Washington University back in 2012.
The rest will soon be history.
ODESZA has made it very clear in multiple interviews and stories that they love the energy and vibes EDM has to offer. However (like the rest of us), they’re still just tired of hearing the same old song and dance over… and over… and over.
Lucky for us, we can get a break from the mainstream hype machine for a bit by listening to their ambient, sophomore LP titled In Return, for free on SoundCloud.
Check out their current tour schedule to see if they’re coming to a town near you. Although some of their shows are sold out and most are probably very close to doing so; not to mention they’re touring with Ambassadeurs and Hayden James.
With constant talk about breathing fresh air into a stale genre, it’s nice to finally see someone doing something about it. Make sure to keep an eye out for this duo. In the next few years, they’ll be on their way to being the next big thing.
Because the dance lords know we’re searching for change now more than ever.
