In what has been an annual tradition for eight years, mashup veteran DJ Earworm has released his United State of Pop 2014 titled “Do What You Wanna Do.”

Now, I’ve never taken to DJ Earworm’s yearly recap because it’s a trip down a memory lane littered with the dirt and grime of overdone Black Eyed Peas and Chris Brown songs.

This year, however, had a bit of a different tone with songs by Sam Smith and Hozier organically mashed between Jason DeRulo and the incomparable Taylor Swift. It’s actually not half-bad.

In honor of 2014’s quite catchy DJ Earworm mashup, we’ve ranked all of them from meh to mindblowing below. There’s no completely unbiased way to rank these, because all of these songs within these songs link us each back to certain memories and times in our lives. So these are ranked on flow and listenability. We got scientific with this shit.

8. United State of Pop 2007

Ya gotta give him some credit here – this was, after all, DJ Earworm’s first go at this tradition. And as far as winner for most nostalgic, this one takes the cake by taking you right back to that dance in the gym sophomore year of high school. It’s also the most heavily Hip-Hop driven, but ultimately it’s not up to what has become the DJ Earworm standard.

2. United State of Pop 2014 (Do What You Want To Do)

Maybe it’s recency effect or maybe it’s that DJ Earworm managed to  use “Say Something” and Sam Smith in a way that doesn’t make you want to roll around in a puddle of your own tears, but 2014’s remix is fantastic. Super listenable, danceable, and just really fun. Plus they snuck “Church” in there several times. Success.

1. United State of Pop 2009 (Blame It On The Pop)

This isn’t even a remix. “Blame it on the Pop” combines a slew of lyrics so cohesively that it actually becomes a song of its very own. Not to mention, you can’t not move to its beat. This is a stuck-in-your-head worthy song and makes The Black Eyed Peas relevant again for a second.
