Remember the early days of online music — when you had to download a media player to listen? The days of downloading before listening are over.
SoundCloud is a Swedish online audio distribution platform based in Berlin, Germany, that allows its users to record, upload, share, and promote their originally-created sounds.
Founders Alexander Ljung and Eric Wahlforss initially wanted to allow musicians to share recordings with one another, but the idea later turned into a full-fledged publishing tool that also allowed musicians to distribute their music tracks across the platform.
SoundCloud now has 40 million registered users, up from 10 million in 2011.
The website reaches 200 million unique listeners around the globe on the Web, mobile devices and on social media sites, which equates to about 8% of the current online population.
Even President Obama has signed on to the distribution platform to share his speeches.
SoundCloud now sees itself as the new Facebook in terms of global ambitions with their main goal revolving around building a platform in preparation to either sell it or float it on the stock market.
Some $45 million in funding has been raised for the company by a variety of venture capital firms, including heavy hitter Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, the company behind Twitter and Flipboard, among others.
It goes without saying: SoundCloud is here to stay.
So let’s take a look at some of the songs that helped the Swedish distribution platform reach a (potential) billion dollar valuation.
Finding the most played songs on SoundCloud is no easy task.
Just try searching for “The Most Played SoundCloud Songs Of All Time” and see what comes up.
Unless you’re still using Ask Jeeves, you probably came up with nothing.
Therefore, we need your help. These are the most listened to songs that we came across, but there has to be more out there that we missed. In this update we’ve upped the minimum to 40,000,000 plays in order to weed out some stragglers.
You’ll noticed we omitted the play count from each slide in order to have the most updated data period for you. The amount of plays is in the bottom right corner of every individual song.
So if you stumble upon a track with more than our minimum, feel free to call us out in the comment section below.
But be nice, there are children present.
