If you haven’t heard of The Knocks already, then listen up – because the once small up-and-comer recently made a big announcement.
They’re releasing the So Classic EP named after their biggest original hit, going on a West Coast tour, and just dropped a top-notch music video for “Dancing With Myself.”
Oof, busy dudes.
It’s always cool to see the evolution of a group from SoundCloud to singles, and it won’t be long until this group is literally knocking at your door. Well not literally, because that would be weird.
Ben “DJ B-Roc” Ruttner and James “JPatt” Patterson first blipped on our radar with their hit, “Classic”, and their song with Treasure Fingers (remixed by Ghosts of Venice), “My Body.” But a sign that you’re going somewhere is when other groups start remixing your original music.
That includes Mat Zo and The Hood Internet – who did an awesome mashup of “Classic” with Big Sean’s “I Don’t Fuck With You” (which goes way too well with this clip of Ron Swanson dancing).
The Knocks first got attention for their remixes of groups like Haim, Foster The People, Ellie Goulding, Passion Pit, The 1975, Santigold and Two Door Cinema; but their original songs are where they really show off. JPatt’s background in soul/funk mixed with B-Roc’s trip-hop gives them a unique electronica sound that’s simultaneously chill, danceable and stuck-in-your-head worthy.
The duo’s origin story could easily be straight out of a TV show.
When Ruttner and Patterson both needed a roommate at The New School in NYC, they ended up living together. The paper thin walls of the apartment – plus the studios they each had in their rooms – didn’t mesh so well with the neighbors. When the neighbors combated the noise by knocking loudly on the walls, the two would walk to each others’ rooms and say, “I just got the knocks.”
And thus the name and partnership was born.
We have to wait until April 7th for their EP to drop, but in the meantime – be the cool kid who discovers new artists before their friends and listen to The Knocks on Soundcloud. “Classic” already sounds like an electronic, well, classic. And I can’t recommend “Dancing With Myself” enough.
At the risk of sounding like a ‘Stefon’ bit from SNL, the music video has everything – dancing, neon, grittily scenic shots of NYC’s China Town.
So yeah, you should probably check ’em out.
